Trump Drops Bombshell: TikTok Ban Could Be Delayed!

In a surprising turn of events, Donald Trump hinted that he might “probably” announce a delay on the controversial TikTok ban as the clock ticks down to the January 19 deadline. In a recent phone interview with NBC News’ “Meet the Press” moderator Kristen Welker, Trump revealed that he is considering a 90-day extension for the Chinese video app, which could prevent it from going dark tomorrow unless its parent company, ByteDance, sells it to an American company.

Following a Supreme Court ruling that upheld the ban, Trump stated, “I think that would be, certainly, an option that we look at. The 90-day extension is something that will most likely be done because it’s appropriate. We have to look at it carefully. It’s a very big situation.” He suggested that an official announcement could come as soon as Monday.

The news comes on the heels of TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew publicly thanking Trump for his commitment to finding a solution to keep TikTok available in the U.S. Chew emphasized the importance of free speech, calling Trump’s potential extension a stand for the First Amendment. He noted that Trump’s own use of TikTok has generated over 60 billion views, highlighting the platform’s significance to both users and the former president.

While a 90-day extension is legally permissible under a law passed in 2024, it remains unclear if this will be sufficient to prevent TikTok’s shutdown. TikTok has expressed a need for more “clarity and assurance” from the U.S. government to avoid the impending ban.

As the situation develops, all eyes are on Trump and TikTok, with the future of the app hanging in the balance.
