Kid Cudi’s Saturday Night Live Dress Was a Timely Tribute to Kurt Cobain
From his early days as a Kanye West protegée in a camo jacket and bandana neck scarf, to his regular appearances at Paris Fashion Week walking for the likes of Virgil Abloh at Louis Vuitton, Kid Cudi has always been one of the most stylish musicians in the game. And this weekend, while appearing as the musical guest on Saturday Night Live, Cudi didn’t disappoint.

The rapper appeared alongside guest host Carey Mulligan, with noted Kid Cudi stan Timothée Chalamet making a surprise cameo, though the real standout moment on last night’s episode was Cudi’s performance look. Cudi kicked off the set with a rendition of his recent single “Tequila Shots” wearing a green cardigan as an homage to Kurt Cobain’s famous piece from his famous 1993 MTV Unplugged show, recorded just months before his passing. Cudi then took his style tribute one step further, performing “Sad People” in a floral dress.
The look harks back to another of Cobain’s most iconic outfits that he wore for a live show in 1989. The legendary Nirvana frontman was known for challenging gender norms with his fashion choices, noting in an interview with the Los Angeles Times: “Wearing a dress shows I can be as feminine as I want. I’m a heterosexual… big deal, but if I was a homosexual, it wouldn’t matter, either.” Worn to coincide with the 27th anniversary of Cobain’s death earlier this month, it made for a powerful salute to one of music’s most renegade style icons. As Abloh himself put it in an Instagram post he shared of the look: “Freedom is as freedom does. Feel free.
