An American Airlines passenger on a flight arriving at Miami International Airport opened an emergency door and jumped onto one of the wings just as the aircraft reached the gate Wednesday night, authorities said.
The bizarre incident happened around 7:30 p.m. on a flight arriving from Cali, Colombia, and ended within minutes as cops immediately took the man into custody, according to police and a statement by American Airlines.
The man, who was caught while walking on the wing, has not been officially identified, but local news outlets said he was a 33-year-old U.S. citizen. He was reportedly detained by U.S. Customs and Border Protection and was taken to a hospital for an evaluation.
The Miami-Dade Police Department has since taken over the case, but there was no word on a possible motive or charges.
The other passengers on the plane were able to get off without further incident.
“We thank our team members and law enforcement for their professionalism and quick action,” the airline said.
