Despite making millions, Daddy Yankee keeps ‘old apartment in the hood’

Daddy Yankee — who has sold over 17 million albums, and has more than 1 billion Spotify streams on three of his tracks — still feels at home in Puerto Rico.

“I move by myself, no security,” the “King of Reggaeton” told Page Six recently. “That’s the good thing about Puerto Rico. In Puerto Rico when you make it, they are proud of you.”

He told us, “I give security security. If I go to the barrio they [are] going to protect you. I still have my old apartment in the hood. It’s two different cultures. I represent the barrio… They are proud of me. I can hang out with the biggest professional, or the biggest gangster in Puerto Rico.”

However, he also considers himself a New Yorker. “I have been attached to New York since the ’80s,” he said. “I consider myself a New Yorker — I lived in Brooklyn and in the Bronx. New York is in my DNA, so I am very attached to the city. It’s just about the vibe

The star — who’s also the only Latin artist with four Spanish-language songs to reach the Top 20 on Billboard’s Hot 100 — admits that not everyone is a fan of his work.

“I get a lot of hate, but I get a lot of love as well,” he said. “It’s all good… hate is good, that means you are doing something right. If you don’t have haters then you need to worry about yourself, honestly, because you have to appreciate both sides of the story.”

He told us of his plans for this year, “For 2022 I am dropping my new album. I haven’t dropped an album in 11 years, so people are waiting for that. This will be my last album and then I am going to relax a little bit. I have new purposes in life as well.”

He just performed at the first ever live Spanish countdown for “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest,” hosted by Roselyn Sanchez in Puerto Rico. He was also inducted into the Billboard Latin Music Awards Hall of Fame last year, and signed with Hollywood agency WME.
