Post-Funeral Shooting Sees Man Gun Down Attendees Paying Last Respects: Police

A shooting left two people critically wounded after an argument at a funeral luncheon escalated to violence this weekend.

The incident occurred on Saturday during a repast luncheon in North Minneapolis. Approximately 100 people were gathered in the community room of the Cora McCorvey Health and Wellness Center following a funeral for a man named Anthony, according to local station Fox 9.

At about 3:30 p.m., a man entered the luncheon and began arguing with a woman who had been in attendance. The relationship between the two has not been determined, nor has it been determined what relationship the man had to the other attendees or the deceased. As they continued to argue, the situation became increasingly heated, leading to the man pulling out a gun and opening fire.

The man ended up hitting two other luncheon attendees, a yet-unnamed man and woman. These two victims were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and were listed as being in critical condition, according to CBS Minnesota.

Police are now working to determine the identity of the shooter and track him down. He fled the scene before officers arrived. No arrests have been made in the case so far.

In a statement on the incident, Minneapolis Police Chief Garrett Parten called the incident “shocking” and offered his thoughts to the friends and family of the deceased.

“Gun violence is seriously concerning. A shooting at a repast is shocking, not only to the individual conscious, but to the community as a whole,” Parten said, according to the local Fox affiliate. “The lack of appreciation for the sanctity of life leaves many of us aching for understanding… This is very hard for family and friends and loved ones who gathered to grieve and honor someone that they had loved.

“What occurred here today is very wrong,” Parten continued. “But I want you to know that the Minneapolis police care, along with all of the other responders who came here to care for these individuals. And we’re going to do everything we can to determine who is responsible for this and to hold them accountable in an appropriate manner.”

As an ongoing investigation, the Minneapolis Police Department is urging anyone with information pertinent to the case to call CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-8477, or to file a tip online at CrimeStoppersMN.org.
