The death on March 18 is the third this year for an inmate of the New York City Department of Corrections.
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A 52-year old man died on Friday in custody at Rikers Island and the cause of death is under investigation by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, according to the New York City Department of Correction.
Herman Diaz entered DOC custody on Feb. 27 on charges for menacing, robbery and a parole violation.
He was pronounced dead at about 11:30 a.m. in a clinic area of the Eric M. Taylor Center (EMTC), according to a statement from the city Department of Correction (DOC).
“Every person matters and every death is tragic,” said Commissioner Louis Molina in a statement. “We are particularly mindful of this today after suffering another terrible loss yesterday. We are heartbroken for Mr. Diaz’s family and loved ones and working with our sister agencies on full investigations into both losses.”
Diaz was the third DOC inmate to die so far this year and the second inmate to die this week, according to a Gothamist report.
All deaths in custody are investigated by the State Attorney General and the Department of Investigation, according to a statement from the DOC.
