Coi Leray is empowering women and paying homage to some Hip Hop legends with her latest track.
On Friday (November 4), the “TWINNEM” rapper shared a video on Instagram previewing an unreleased record that features a heavy sample of Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five’s classic 1982 hit “The Message.”
Taking inspiration from the original cadence of the iconic early Hip Hop record, Coi Leray can be heard championing women on the unreleased joint, which she’s already crowned the “new anthem.” Over the funky, bouncy beat in the video clip, she raps: “Cuz girls is playa’s too.”
“GIRLS IS PLAYAS TOOO !!! KEEEP IT PLAYER BABYYYYY [Heart emojis] GOOD VIBES AND GOOD ENERGY!!!!,” Coi Leray wrote in the caption of the video on Instagram.
While it’s clear the 2022 DX Rising star was influenced by “The Message,” she’s also added her own spice and flare to the demo, which vividly captures her patent rap-heavy, melody-ready formula as she weaves in and out of rhythmic pockets and vocal patterns through the minute-long snippet.
“What you know about living on top/ Penthouse suites looking down on the opps/ Took him for a test drive/ Left him on the lot/ Time is money/ So I spent it on a watch,” Coi Leray raps in the video.
New York Hip Hop tastemakers such as DJ Clue and former G-Unit affiliate DJ Whoo Kid showed their support for the record in the comments of Coi Leray’s original IG post. “Send that thru,” Clue wrote in a comment while Whoo Kidd added several fire emojis in another comment.
While she didn’t provide any details on a possible release date for the record, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the record is officially released soon as Coi Leray has rolled out several of her recent singles on social media ahead of the official release.
Last August, she launched a major social media campaign including TikTok dance challenges and a performance with viral producer and Ukele player Einer Bankz in support of the September release of her single “Fly Shit.”
She also leveraged her social media following to boost the hype surrounding her “Blick Blick” collaboration with Nicki Minaj, which became the No. 1 video trending on YouTube following it’s March 18 release and also immediately reached the No. 1 spot on the U.S. iTunes chart.
Nicki Minaj took a moment to acknowledge Coi Leray’s standout bars on the record by showing love on Twitter. Not only did Nicki go off by gushing about how Coi’s outright dominant lyrical performance, but the “Seeing Green” rapper also explained how she cut some of her guest verse in order to showcase her co-pilot’s outro flow.
“Did Coi body that or did Coi body that?,” Nicki Minaj wrote in a tweet on March 17. “I was in love with her verse the second I heard it. No way I wasn’t stealing her outro flow. #BlickBlick
