THE WEEKND’S ‘BLINDING LIGHTS’ BECOMES SPOTIFY’S MOST STREAMED SONG OF ALL TIME

The Weeknd has broken yet another record with his 2019 smash hit “Blinding Lights” as it’s become Spotify’s most streamed song of all time.

According to Chart Data, the Canadian singer’s 2019 hit has surpassed Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You” to become the No. 1 streamed song in the streaming platform’s history. The Weeknd himself also ended 2022 as one of Spotify’s most-streamed artists of the year.

On New Year’s Eve (December 31), The Weeknd took to Twitter to celebrate the feat — which saw him beat out Sheeran’s 2017 track by 918,000 filtered streams — by sharing Spotify’s Daily Global chart stats. “FOR NEW YEARS ???” he captioned the post.

In a second tweet he shared four stills from the music video for “Blinding Lights” and wrote: “happy new years to blinding lights. the most streamed song of all time tonight.”

Taken from The Weeknd’s fourth studio album, After Hours, “Blinding Lights” has been breaking records left, right and center ever since its release just over three years ago, including being the fastest song in history to reach 2.5 billion Spotify streams.

Not stopping at there, though. Another of The Weeknd’s hits made headlines last month when the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) awarded the Canadian singer a diamond plaque for his 2015 single “Can’t Feel My Face” which has now moved 10 million units.

It’s not the first time The Weeknd has earned a diamond plaque. He’s done it three other times after his singles “The Hills,” “Starboy” and “Blinding Lights” all hit the 10 million mark.

The recent milestone also makes The Weeknd the third solo artist and fourth artist overall to achieve four diamond certifications. He is currently tied for second place on the all-time list for most diamond plaques with Post Malone and Imagine Dragons.

Bruno Mars leads the pack on the all-time list with a record five diamond singles. The Weeknd is also the first Canadian artist to score at least four diamond plaques. Fellow Toronto artist Drake currently has three.
