A video will be included with the release of “TAG ‘You It’,” which was filmed before Coolio’s September 2022 passing. The song and visual “pay homage to ’90s Hip Hop” according to the press release, and is “catchy, raunchy, and raw in all of the right ways with an extravagant and humorous video in perfect Coolio fashion.”
LONG LIVE COOLIO will be the “Gangsta’s Paradise” rapper’s first LP since his 2009 offering From the Bottom 2 the Top.
Coolio unexpectedly passed away at the age of 59 on September 28. According to his longtime manager Jarez, the Los Angeles native was visiting a friend’s house at the time and went to the bathroom, but never came back. His friend went to check on him and eventually discovered the Grammy Award-winner laying on the bathroom floor. Paramedics were called to the house, but he was pronounced dead on the scene.
Before his untimely passing, Coolio was on the verge of finalizing a deal for a Las Vegas residency. The run would have been for 10 shows at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino, starting in late October and going through mid-November.
He was also preparing to bring his “Kwanzaa-bot” character back to Futurama for the cartoon’s forthcoming revival on Hulu. With his lines and a few bars already recorded, the show will move forward with the character’s return and will dedicate the episode to Coolio’s memory.
At the top of the new year, a custom headstone for the late rapper was unveiled, which features photos and a homage to his biggest record, “Gangsta’s Paradise.”
According to TMZ, Coolio’s girlfriend Mimi enlisted the help of a man by the name of Cemetery Tim, who has also done headstones for the late Nate Dogg, Eazy-E and Anthony Johnson. Though Coolio was cremated, his family wanted a physical place to go pay their respects, and the piece was delivered to them just before the new year.
It’s since been set at an undisclosed location in Los Angeles.
