Conway The Machine has been in a reflective space lately and wants to clear up a few comments he made last year regarding Griselda’s contract and Westside Gunn.
While having a cathartic conversation on Matt Hoffa’s My Expert Opinion podcast on Tuesday (May 23), the New York native denied rumors of a rift in the Griselda camp which was sparked by his contract comments. He also made it clear that they’ve “always been together” despite having their own separate stuff going on with albums and labels.
“It wasn’t nothing there, it just looked like it on the surface,” Conway The Machine said. “I think fans just ran with certain dickhead shit I done said and did in interviews. Certain fan theories that just led to the assumption that, you know, nah, them boys is fighting and at odds
The “Scatter Brain” rapper then said he takes complete responsibility for what he said and why it got out of hands from a public perception standpoint.
“Honestly, I operated out of my feelings,” Conway continued. “I operated out of my feelings man. My brother ain’t deserve that shit man, West ain’t deserve that, none of that shit that I was doing, saying in them interviews, man. I want to just be very clear, nobody owes me a penny. Nobody stole nothing from me. West and them, Shady Records, nobody, all my business was on the up and up.
He added: “When I was saying in The Breakfast Club interview how I didn’t read the contract and all that shit, it wasn’t coming from a place 0f idiocy. It was out of loyal that I didn’t read that shit. That’s my brother. I ain’t gotta read nothin.’ I know we good. That’s what that was.”
In March 2022, Conway The Machine stopped by The Breakfast Club for an insightful interview and admitted he never read the contract he signed with Griselda
When we did that shit in the beginning, I really wasn’t all the way — man, I’ma keep it a buck, I ain’t even read that contract, bro. I just signed that shit and moved on, but unfortunately the contract wasn’t in my favor.
“So now, going forward, it’s time to redo all that, I gotta make sure if it’s in my favor or not. I’ma wave the Griselda flag regardless because I built [that], I was hands on with that, me and West[side Gunn]. So we can figure something out, which I’m sure we will. That’s the first situation I’m talking to like, ‘West, what we gonna do?’”
Charlamagne Tha God then asked Conway if money was the reason he didn’t have a lawyer go over the contract, to which he said he didn’t receive any money from the deal.
I didn’t get no money,” he said. “[Shady gave me] some pocket change. I did three contracts with Shady, Interscope and Griselda.”
He added, “I have no idea how it worked out for [Westside Gunn and Benny The Butcher]. I just know how it went with me, which again, I’m ok with, I can sleep at night, I know what I did and how I kept it and how I rock. Now, you know, it’s the end, we dropped some beautiful music. Let’s continue
