Doja Cat is conquering her demons — and Christina Ricci’s — in the music video for her latest single “Demons.”
Adorned in all-black, down to the tip of her razor-cut stilettos, Doja haunts Ricci (known for her 1991 spearheading role as Wednesday in “The Addams Family”) throughout “Demons.” After purchasing a new house with high hopes, Ricci’s family quickly learns that the home is haunted by a devilish creature — aka Doja Cat
The track sees Doja trade in her pop sound that fans fell in love with on “Say So” for a more rap-centric aura, a shift she told Variety she’d be making with the upcoming album. Of working on “Vegas,” which earned her a Grammy nomination for best rap performance, Doja raved about being able to “rap again” on the track.
“I went in and I was like, ‘Finally, I get to rap again,’” she said. “A lot of people discredit me, so it’s nice to just put another one in the fucking bucket for a great rap song,” a coup she’s accomplished once again on “Demons.”
“Demons” serves as the latest single of Doja’s forthcoming album “Scarlet,” which is set to drop on Sept. 22. It follows the previously released singles “Attention” and “Paint the Town Red,” with the former helping her garner five nominations at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards (including best video of the year and artist of the year), which she’s slated to perform at.
Doja will also headline “The Victoria’s Secret World Tour,” a half-fashion show, a half-documentary on the lingerie brand, which will premiere on Prime Video on Sept. 26. After announcing her headlining act, Doja told Harper’s Bazaar that there would be “lots of different energy to songs, plus new sounds that I’ve never explored before” of her upcoming album — a feat explored through “Demons.” Adding to her busy schedule, Doja is heading out for her first-ever headlining arena tour across North America later this fall. “The Scarlet Tour,” a 24-date trek kicks off on Oct. 31 in San Francisco with stops in Miami, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and more major cities. Ice Spice and Doechii will provide support on select dates for the Live Nation-produced shows.
