Lola Brooke has quite the fan in Taraji P. Henson – and even more so after the actress was name-dropped in one of her songs.
On 2023’s “You” with Bryson Tiller, Lola raps, “Bitch, I go Taraji for my baby boy!” The line references the cult classic Baby Boy, where Taraji stars opposite Tyrese in the John Singleton-directed film.
The acclaimed actress was asked about the line while in the UK talking to BBC 1xtra’s Nadia Jae recently, and she was quick to gush about how much she loves the pint-sized Brooklyn raptress.
“I was just scrolling and, you know, I’m a hip-hop head and I love female MCs and I always post them,” Taraji began. “I knew about Lola because I’ve seen the award ceremonies. I love the song. And I love her voice; it’s nostalgic for me. She reminds me of the female MCs back in the day – Lil Kim, Foxy Brown. She has that tone. And I was like, ‘Who is like young girl?’
So I’ve been watching her and then she dropped that song and I was scrolling and I was like, ‘Wait! What did she say?!’ And she didn’t say [my Baby Boy character name] Yvette – she said my name!
“And so I reposted it and she reached out to me in the DM and she was like, ‘Oh wow, oh my God. You’re so iconic. This means so much to me!’ I said, ‘Baby girl, just keep doing it. I got you. I’m a fan!’”
Lola Brooke isn’t the only one to mention Taraji P. Henson in a song as of late. In fact, the actress had an entire song dedicated to her by Los Angeles-based rapper C5 recently, following her teary-eyed admission about how much she’s had to work to stay afloat and manage her finances while being paid a fraction of what some of her peers make.
“I’m just tired of working so hard being gracious at what I do and getting paid a fraction of the cost. I’m tired of hearing my sisters say the same thing over and over,” she said on SiriusXM last month. “I hear people go, ‘You work alot.’ I have to. The math ain’t mathing. When you start working you have a team and big bills come with what you do.
When you hear someone saying ‘Such and such made $10 million.’ That didn’t make it to their account. Know that off the top Uncle Sam is getting 50 percent. Do the math now we have $5 million. Your team is getting 30 percent off of what you gross not what Uncle Sam took. Now, do the math. It seems whenever I break a glass ceiling and it’s time to renegotiate I’m at the bottom again.”
Shortly after, C5 made a dedication song with an accompanying video, and Taraji was filled with gratitude as she reposted it to her page.
Young man the image you are displaying is sooooo powerful!!!” she wrote. “What an amazing heart you have and you are passing your beautiful humanity down to your baby. What an awesome dad/human you are. I am so grateful for your love and support. MIGHT I ADD YOU GOT BARZZZZZ. I adore you and may God bless and protect you and your beautiful family always. You made my heart smile DEEP!!!”
