Music producer Jermaine Dupri recently spoke out about the state of hip hop, referencing rapper Sexxy Red’s album sales to make his point.

“Jermaine Dupri used the launch of Sexyy Red’s new album as an opportunity to share his thoughts on the current state of Hip Hop and how it can be revitalized. Speaking at the SelectCon conference in Atlanta, hosted by United Masters, the legendary producer and founder of So So Def Recordings engaged in a conversation with CEO Steve Stoute, sharing his insights on the genre’s current landscape and offering his vision for its future.”

Jermaine Dupri recently emphasized the importance of album sales in the music industry. He mentioned that people need to stop lying and acknowledge that selling albums still matters. He pointed out that there is a misconception perpetuated by the industry that having a hot single is enough, and album sales don’t hold much significance. To support his point, he mentioned Akademiks’ post about Sexyy Red’s album only selling 28,000 copies.

Dupri highlighted that in the era he entered the music industry, selling such a low number of copies would have meant no further chances or recognition. Artists who sold only 28,000 records were not considered significant players and were often overlooked. He emphasized the disconnect between people’s understanding of the streaming landscape and the actual impact of album sales.

Dupri’s comments serve as a reminder that album sales still play a crucial role in the music industry, despite the rise of streaming platforms. Selling albums not only contributes to an artist’s success but also demonstrates their staying power and ability to resonate with listeners on a deeper level.

“Jermaine Dupri continued, “I come from a time when sales figures were 80,000, 100,000, 200,000, 800,000, 900,000. To me, the current state of the industry feels like a step backward.” It’s worth noting that Sexxy Red’s latest album, “In Sexxy We Trust”, sold 27,000 equivalent units, which is a notable achievement in today’s music landscape. In fact, it debuted at number 17 on the Billboard 200 album chart. You can watch the clip below, starting at 18:40.”

Despite the lower album sales, Sexyy Red continues to make a significant impact in the rap industry and is considered one of the biggest rising names in the genre. Her talent and potential have caught the attention of fellow artist Lil Baby, who recently announced that he is preparing for another collaboration with Sexyy Red. This exciting news seems to have been confirmed by Sexyy Red herself. The upcoming collaboration between these two artists indicates the recognition and respect Sexyy Red has earned within the industry. It further solidifies her position as a promising and influential figure in rap music.

“The Atlanta-based artist shared a sneak peek of an unreleased track on his Instagram Stories, featuring a collaboration with the duo. The snippet showcases the 26-year-old rapper’s verse, “All my friends are connectors, I never have to purchase weed,” followed by a verse from the other artist.”

Following the Grammy winner’s teaser of the track on social media, the rapper from St. Louis also shared a clip of it on X (formerly Twitter). However, neither Sexyy Red nor Lil Baby have revealed a release date for the song yet. This collaboration marks their second project together, as they previously joined forces on the track “Lick Me,” which was featured on Sexyy Red’s album “In Sexyy We Trust.” The success of their previous collaboration has likely contributed to the anticipation surrounding their upcoming song. Fans of both artists can look forward to another exciting collaboration that showcases their unique talents and musical chemistry.

Sexxy Red is expanding her horizons beyond music. The rapper recently made a splash in the world of professional wrestling, debuting on WWE NXT. She’ll also be hosting the upcoming Battleground event in Las Vegas.
“She also had a memorable encounter with wrestling legend Shawn Michaels backstage, as seen in a video where they both enthusiastically sang along to his iconic theme song, “I’m A Sexy Boy”. The clip caught the attention of WWE’s Triple H, who playfully commented on social media, “Let’s all breathe a sigh of relief that he didn’t bust out his best twerking moves!”
