HipHopRaisedMeTheBlog.com is saddened to report that Debbie Nelson, the mother of rapper Eminem, has died at the age of 69 due to complications from lung cancer. According to TMZ, she passed away on the evening of December 2 in St. Joseph, Missouri.
Eminem, whose real name is Marshall Mathers, has not yet publicly addressed her passing. Debbie’s cancer diagnosis was made public in September, with reports indicating that she was terminally ill and had a limited time left to live.
In recent years, Eminem had been financially supporting his mother during her illness, although their relationship has been complicated and strained for many years. Debbie previously battled breast cancer and spoke about her health issues in a 2018 interview with The Village Voice, expressing concerns about hereditary health conditions affecting her family.
The relationship between Eminem and Debbie has often been tumultuous, with the rapper referencing her in many of his songs. Notably, in 2000, she filed a defamation lawsuit against him for insinuating that she was a drug addict in his hit song “My Name Is.” Although she sought $10 million in damages, the case was settled for $25,000.
In a more reconciliatory tone, Eminem extended an olive branch to Debbie in his 2013 song “Headlights,” where he rapped: “Ma, I forgive you, so does Nathan, yo / All you did, all you said, you did your best to raise us both.”
After Eminem’s induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022, Debbie publicly congratulated him, expressing her pride in a video message. “Marshall, I want to say, I could not let this day go by without congratulating you on your induction into the Hall of Fame,” she said. “I love you very much. I knew you’d get there. It’s been a long ride.”
