Currently basking in success, Doechii is making waves with Grammy nominations, a celebrated television appearance, and a recent Tiny Desk Concert. The TDE artist is determined to maintain her trajectory into 2025 with the release of her much-anticipated debut album.
In a recent interview with Variety, published on December 6, Doechii clarified that her breakthrough project, Alligator Bites Never Heal, is a mixtape, not her official album. She confirmed that her debut LP is slated for a 2025 release and promises a rich incorporation of live instrumentation.
“All I can think about is this album, so I’m excited to create more hits and make further strides in my career,” she shared. “That’s my sole focus.”
Days prior to the interview, Doechii captivated audiences with a mesmerizing performance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Her set featured a dynamic medley of tracks from her acclaimed mixtape, accompanied by two dancers in stylish Gucci skirts.
In a nod to the late MF DOOM, Doechii began and ended her performance with quotes from the rapper’s 2011 Red Bull Music Academy lecture, showcasing her respect for Hip Hop’s legacy.
The artist, who refers to herself as the Swamp Princess, revealed on social media that she choreographed the performance herself, emphasizing her connection to Hip Hop and the empowerment of Black women.
“This performance is dedicated to Hip Hop,” she posted on X. “I drew inspiration from the rich history of Hip Hop and its impact on my identity today.”
She also expressed gratitude to hair artist Malcom Marquez for helping bring her vision to life in just a week and acknowledged her inspirations, including Solange, Carlota Guerrero, and the late MF DOOM. Additionally, she thanked her stylist Sam Woolf for effectively translating her vision of Hip Hop through fashion.
In her closing remarks, Doechii declared, “This is my vision for the future of Hip Hop. It embodies blackness, luxury, and history.”
