In a bold response to serious allegations, Jay-Z has labeled claims of his involvement in a 2000 rape case as “absurd.” The accuser remains anonymous.
In a shocking turn of events, Shawn Carter—better known as Jay-Z—has been named in a civil lawsuit alleging that he and Sean “Diddy” Combs raped a 13-year-old girl back in 2000. The lawsuit, filed on Sunday, identifies the accuser only as “Jane Doe,” claiming the incident occurred after she was taken to an MTV Video Music Awards after-party.
Originally filed in October in the Southern District of New York, the lawsuit initially named Combs as a defendant but was amended to include Carter over the weekend. Texas attorney Tony Buzbee, who represents the plaintiff, has not made any public statements regarding the case.
Carter vehemently denied the allegations in a comprehensive statement, calling them “idiotic” and suggesting that Buzbee was acting unprofessionally. “These allegations are so heinous that I urge you to file a criminal complaint instead of a civil one. Anyone capable of such a crime against a minor should be incarcerated, wouldn’t you agree?” Carter expressed in a statement to NBC News. He emphasized that genuine victims deserve real justice.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York declined to comment on whether they are investigating the case following NBC News’ inquiry about the lawsuit.
Buzbee has filed multiple lawsuits recently—each involving unnamed complainants—accusing Combs of various sexual offenses. This lawsuit marks the first instance where he has included another well-known figure as a defendant.
In response, Combs’ legal team criticized the lawsuits, describing them as “shameless publicity stunts” aimed at extorting money from celebrities who are afraid of false accusations. “Mr. Combs has complete faith in the facts and the integrity of the judicial system. The truth will come to light in court: Mr. Combs has never sexually assaulted or trafficked anyone—of any age,” their statement read.
Currently, Combs is facing criminal charges in New York, including racketeering and sex trafficking, and is being held at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center after bail was denied for the third time last month. His trial is set for May 5.
Prosecutors indicated in a recent court appearance that they might file additional charges against Combs through a superseding indictment.
Prior to the lawsuit being refiled, Buzbee mentioned that Carter received a mediation request from the plaintiff’s counsel, to which Carter reportedly responded by initiating his own legal action against the accuser’s lawyers.
“You’ve made a grave mistake in assuming that all celebrities are alike,” Carter continued in his statement. “I come from a different background. I grew up in the projects of Brooklyn. We uphold strict codes and values. We protect children.”
The lawsuit alleges that during the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards, Combs and Carter assaulted the then-13-year-old Doe at a house party following the event.
According to the lawsuit, Doe was dropped off at the VMAs by a friend, despite not having a ticket, and attempted to gain entry by approaching various limousine drivers. One driver, who claimed to work for Combs, allegedly told her she “fit what Diddy was looking for” and invited her to an after-party.
The lawsuit states that after being picked up, the driver took her to a white house where she was required to sign a document she believed to be a nondisclosure agreement, after which she entered a party filled with celebrities and drug use.
She was offered a drink that left her feeling “woozy” and later sought a place to lie down, only to be confronted by Combs and Carter, who allegedly assaulted her.
The suit claims she managed to resist performing oral sex on Combs by hitting him, which caused him to stop. Following the incident, she fled and called her father from a gas station.
The accuser is seeking unspecified damages under New York’s Victims of Gender-Motivated Violence Protection Act.
“My only sorrow is for my family,” Carter stated. “My wife and I will have to explain to our children—one of whom is at an age where friends will undoubtedly see this news and ask questions—about the cruelty and greed of certain individuals. I mourn yet another loss of innocence.”
Carter concluded his statement by dismissing the allegations as ludicrous, stating, “Only those in your network of conspiracy theorists would believe these ridiculous claims, which, if not for the serious nature of harm to children, would be laughable.”
