Chey, Daughter of Wu-Tang Clan’s Method Man, Emerges as Staten Island’s Newest Hip-Hop Sensation

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The legacy of Staten Island’s iconic Wu-Tang Clan continues as Cheyenne Smith, known in the music world as “Chey,” steps into the limelight. As the daughter of legendary rapper and actor Method Man, whose real name is Clifford Smith, Jr., Chey is forging her own path in both music and acting, showcasing the undeniable talent that runs in the family.

Chey burst onto the scene with the release of three singles: “Boujee & Ghetto” in February, “Hair & Nails” in January, and “Walk.” A Staten Island native and Wagner College graduate, she has made her mark in the competitive music industry after initially pursuing a career in psychology, particularly working with children with special needs.

“My greatest influence would have to be my grandmother (RIP Nana),” Chey shared in an interview. “She always inspired me to go after everything I want and she always spoke life into me. She is truly missed, and everything I do is for her.”

The rising female rapper made her major stage debut at Detroit’s Little Caesars Arena, performing alongside iconic rapper Trina and other prominent artists. She also showcased her skills at the 2024 BET Hip Hop Awards, delivering a memorable freestyle performance.

A STRONG FAMILY MUSICAL HERITAGE

Transitioning from psychology to music, Chey is dedicated to her aspirations in rap and acting, drawing inspiration from her family’s musical background. “I don’t follow trends, I’m trending,” Chey stated during a recent podcast appearance on “Sway’s Universe.”

Chey emphasizes that she remains true to herself and her style, saying, “I rap about topics I feel comfortable with, like cars, jewelry, clothes, and nightlife. If I just stay true to that, that’s where I feel most comfortable.” However, she recognizes the unique challenges female rappers face, including gender stereotypes and navigating an industry that often prioritizes looks over talent.

“It is 100% more difficult for female rappers to succeed in rap,” Chey noted. “The expectations are always very high. The way the industry is now, the females are dominating, so it’s always good to see my fellow girls doing their thing as well.”

CHEY’S UNIQUE SOUND

Chey’s lyrical talent gained attention when she went viral for her freestyle over Redman’s “Goodness” beat during an appearance on the iconic Sway in the Morning show. More recently, she wowed fans with a freestyle on the Notorious B.I.G.’s “Long Kiss Goodnight” instrumental, produced by Wu-Tang’s own RZA.

Looking ahead to 2025, Chey is set to release her debut mixtape, “Chey’s Time,” early in the year, promising fresh tracks that highlight her dynamic range and undeniable charisma. Embracing her heritage while establishing her own identity, Chey’s sound melds modern rap with classic beats, honoring her Wu-Tang roots while appealing to a new generation of listeners.

Chey credits her entire family, including her mom, for their unwavering support. “My dad definitely influenced my decision to rap,” she shared. “Both of my parents encouraged me to follow my dreams, and I couldn’t be more grateful for their support.”

METHOD MAN AS A MENTOR

Chey’s introduction to rap came from her father, Method Man, who guided her in freestyling and writing lyrics. Growing up in a musical environment, she discovered her passion for performing at a young age. Her sound combines relatable vibes, catchy beats, and lyrics that resonate with real emotions and experiences, drawing inspiration from hip-hop classics.

“I want my music to spread originality and self-confidence,” Chey explained. “I hope my listeners feel inspired to be themselves. The support and love from my fans are what keep me going and fuel my creativity.”

For aspiring artists, Chey advises staying true to oneself, working hard, and persevering through challenges. “Stick to your vision and maintain a positive mindset, even when things get tough,” she urges.

With ambitious dreams for the future, Chey envisions herself achieving significant accolades: “In five years, I see myself with at least half of my EGOT,” she said, referring to the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony awards. “I’ll be performing at sold-out stadiums and shows, and I want the world to fall in love with everything I have to offer.”

The legacy of Staten Island’s Wu-Tang Clan continues with Cheyenne Smith, a shining star on the rise in the hip-hop scene.
