Consequence Unveils Unreleased Verse from Classic Common and Kanye West Track

Consequence recently shared an intriguing revelation about his connection to the iconic track “They Say” by Common and Kanye West. Although he originally contributed a verse to the song, it was ultimately cut from the final version before its release.

On December 18, he took to Instagram to post an image featuring the G.O.O.D. Music logo and included the verse that didn’t make it onto Common’s acclaimed 2005 album, Be. In his caption, he mentioned, “We were supposed to do a video with the version featuring me, but it never happened…”

While many fans were excited to hear this news, some pointed out that his verse wasn’t entirely lost to the public. A leaked version of the album that circulated prior to its official launch did include his contribution. One fan remarked, “Real ones heard this on the mixtape back in the day,” while another recalled, “I had the bootleg Be, so I heard this before the Ye verse, lol.”

After releasing his debut album Don’t Quit Your Day Job! in 2007, Consequence stepped away from the music scene for nearly a decade. Following another break after his 2017 EP A Good Comeback Story, he returned with his sophomore album Nice Doing Business With You earlier this year.

In an interview with the Toure Show in October, he elaborated on the reasons behind his hiatus. “I had a record deal with Motown that didn’t pan out, even though I had a number one record at Urban Radio,” he explained. He went on to clarify that after Kanye West’s infamous interruption of Taylor Swift at the MTV Video Music Awards, anything associated with Kanye was pulled from radio, which affected his track “Whatever You Want” featuring Kanye and John Legend.

Consequence further clarified that while his song wasn’t technically shelved, it lost significant momentum due to the surrounding events. He noted, “The only record that radio was even considering playing at that time was ‘Run This Town,’ as mine was still climbing.”

He added that the chaos of the industry during that period led to the birth of the GOOD Fridays initiative, as Kanye felt the need to release music directly to fans amidst the tumultuous atmosphere.
