Barack Obama is known for his annual tradition of sharing year-end lists that highlight his favorite films, books, and songs. With Kendrick Lamar making a significant impact in the hip-hop scene throughout 2024, it was expected that he would feature on the former president’s list. However, instead of opting for the celebratory diss track “Not Like Us” or the meme-fueled “tv off,” Obama selected Kendrick’s L.A. anthem “Squabble Up” as one of his favorite songs of the year.
“Squabble Up” was highly anticipated after being teased in the intro of the “Not Like Us” video and ultimately reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100. The choice of this upbeat track aligns well with Obama’s approachable and laid-back persona, especially compared to the more aggressive tones of “Like That” and “Not Like Us.”
In a recent interview, Obama expressed his admiration for Kendrick’s lyrical talent and the depth of his message. “I do think that Kendrick has a unique status right now,” he stated. “He’s not just gifted; he’s serious about the message… he digs deep into himself.” While he refrained from declaring a definitive winner in the ongoing Drake vs. Kendrick Lamar rivalry, he did reveal his preference back in 2016, stating, “Gotta go with Kendrick. I think Drake is an outstanding entertainer, but Kendrick, his lyrics, his last album was outstanding.”
The mutual respect between the two is evident. After meeting Obama in 2016, Kendrick expressed his gratitude when the president revealed his appreciation for To Pimp a Butterfly. Kendrick recalled, “When [the President] said to my face what his favorite record was, I understood that no matter how high-ranking you get in this world, you’re human.”
Notably absent from Obama’s year-end list was Drake, further emphasizing the former president’s preference for Kendrick.
