Minnesota rapper Lil Shine, whose real name is Jasper William Johnson, is facing serious legal troubles after being charged with federal offenses related to a drug fraud scheme involving the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). The indictment, revealed on December 21, 2024, alleges that Lil Shine, along with accomplices Oscar Becerra-Ruiz and Raujaun Keon Varner, orchestrated a hacking operation to gain unauthorized access to the DEA’s practitioners and physicians’ system.
The trio is accused of executing a scheme that led to the fraudulent ordering of over 300 pints of promethazine with codeine, a substance often misused for its intoxicating effects. They have been formally charged with conspiracy to acquire controlled substances by fraud, 11 counts of wire fraud, and four counts of aggravated identity theft.
According to the indictment, the accused began their activities between December 2022 and August 2023, during which they allegedly stole personal information from physicians to create fake customer accounts with pharmaceutical wholesalers. These fraudulent accounts were used to place large orders for promethazine with codeine, which were then shipped to counterfeit doctor’s offices across the United States, with the intention of selling the drugs on the street. The street value of the seized promethazine is estimated to be around $750,000.
In light of these serious allegations, the DEA confirmed that no patient data was compromised during the hacking incident.
Lil Shine took to social media to proclaim his innocence, stating emphatically on his Instagram Stories, “IM INNOCENT!” He elaborated in an Instagram Live session, expressing his determination to fight the charges while maintaining his musical career. “Basically, I’ve been given the opportunity to fight this, and it could take anywhere from six months to a year, and I can drop music and shit,” he shared.
He further acknowledged the gravity of the situation, noting that federal charges differ significantly from state cases. “Without God, I’d be having to fight this shit from inside,” he said, emphasizing his resolve to stay strong. He also mentioned receiving a target letter prior to the charges, indicating that he anticipated legal action.
Despite the challenges ahead, Lil Shine remains focused on his music and has announced plans to release a new single on Christmas Day, followed by a new project on New Year’s Day.
