SZA is thrilled to have received a nod of approval from legendary film director Martin Scorsese following the release of her highly anticipated deluxe version of SOS: Lana. The mention came through Scorsese’s daughter, Francesca, who posted on Instagram a picture of her father alongside SZA’s new track, “Scorsese Baby Daddy,” captioning it, “SZA, Queen sh*t.” SZA quickly shared her excitement, responding with, “The fact that this isn’t AI, and it is actually Martin Scorsese 😭.”
This acknowledgment brought SZA relief after delaying the release of the 38-song version of her sophomore album. The track “Scorsese Baby Daddy” further delves into her fascination with cinema, building on themes from her previous work, which was heavily influenced by Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill. In the new song, SZA likens Scorsese to the master of emotional storytelling, expressing her spiraling emotions and chaos with lines like: “I rolled up all my problems / And then I smoked about it / I could’ve called my mom up / I’d rather f*ck about it / Addicted to the drama / Scorsese baby daddy.”
SOS: Lana also features a collaboration with Kendrick Lamar on the track “30 for 30,” which many speculate contains references to Lamar’s rival, Drake. The duo describes a “corny-ass dude” that fans believe is aimed at the 6 God, although there has yet to be a response from Drake.
The excitement surrounding SZA’s music coincides with her acting debut in the upcoming film One of Them Days, where she stars alongside Keke Palmer. The film revolves around best friends struggling to gather rent money before facing eviction and will be in theaters nationwide on January 24.
