JAY-Z’s legal troubles surrounding a sexual assault allegation have taken a new turn, with Tony Buzbee’s former client filing a lawsuit against both Roc Nation and JAY’s law firm, Quinn Emanuel. The suit, lodged in Harris County, Texas, accuses the defendants of employing dubious tactics to recruit former clients of Buzbee in order to file unfounded lawsuits against him.
The lawsuit was initiated by Jose Maldonado, who is represented by Buzbee, on January 3. It alleges that individuals associated with Quinn Emanuel and Roc Nation offered Buzbee’s former clients up to $10,000 to pursue legal action against the attorney.
Buzbee currently represents an anonymous woman who has accused JAY-Z and Diddy of raping her at a party following the 2000 Video Music Awards. The latest lawsuit adds to a series of ongoing legal disputes between JAY-Z, his legal team, and Buzbee. Notably, JAY-Z filed an extortion lawsuit against Buzbee last November, while Buzbee has also filed lawsuits against Quinn Emanuel and Roc Nation.
In response to the recent allegations, a Roc Nation spokesperson issued a statement dismissing the claims as distractions from Buzbee’s legal challenges with former clients. The spokesperson asserted that Roc Nation had no involvement in the alleged misconduct and criticized Buzbee for failing to properly vet his anonymous client.
In the sexual assault case itself, JAY-Z received a minor legal victory recently, as a judge permitted him to move forward with a motion to dismiss the lawsuit. This motion targets serious allegations made against him, including claims of raping a 13-year-old girl alongside Diddy 25 years ago. The anonymous accuser’s attorney, Buzbee, has until the end of February to respond to this dismissal request.
JAY-Z’s legal counsel has previously highlighted potential weaknesses in the lawsuit, focusing on legal technicalities concerning the timing and specifics of the allegations. As the legal battles unfold, all eyes remain on the proceedings and the implications they carry for the hip-hop icon.
