Dame Dash Ordered to Pay Filmmaker $4M in Defamation Lawsuit

Dame Dash’s legal troubles have escalated as he has been ordered to pay $4 million to filmmaker Josh Webber after being found guilty of defamation. This hefty judgment comes in the wake of a dispute that has been brewing for some time, particularly following comments Dash made during an appearance on the Earn Your Leisure podcast in 2024.

According to reports from TMZ, Webber filed the lawsuit last year, claiming that he lost out on $4 million worth of work due to Dash’s defamatory remarks. During the podcast, the Roc-A-Fella Records co-founder alleged that Webber had stolen from him in relation to their previous interactions regarding the 2019 film Dear Frank. Dash stated, “I had a judgment. And I knew this dickhead Chris Brown and Josh Webber and Muddy Waters… What I lost was defamation because these guys trigger me and steal my shit.”

The comments made by Dash were tied to a prior lawsuit in which he was ordered to pay nearly $1 million to Webber for copyright infringement and defamation. Dash had initially been set to direct Dear Frank in 2016 but was removed from the project due to concerns about his behavior on set, with claims that he was often high while filming at his Sherman Oaks property.

Following Dash’s removal, Webber and Muddy Waters Pictures completed the film without him and subsequently sued Dash for allegedly attempting to present the film as his own. They accused him of sending promotional materials to networks, including BET, while changing the title to The List.

Despite this latest judgment, Dame Dash has not publicly commented on the court’s decision. His financial situation continues to be precarious; a recent auction of his one-third stake in Roc-A-Fella, Inc. was conducted to settle his significant debts, which include unpaid taxes and child support. Unfortunately for Webber, Dash’s financial woes mean he has yet to see any of the funds owed to him.

Following the auction, Webber sought ownership documents from Dash in an effort to enforce the judgment, aiming to claim his media company, Poppington, LLC, and potentially the copyrights to films he produced. In a further effort to recover his losses, Webber’s legal team has also filed to auction off Dash’s engagement ring.

As Dame Dash navigates these ongoing legal battles and financial difficulties, it remains to be seen how this latest ruling will affect his future endeavors in the industry.
