André 3000‘s new album New Blue Sun has received a makeover from Aftermath producer Dem Jointz — and Snoop Dogg wants in on the action.
Jointz — who worked on Dr. Dre‘s Compton as well as songs with Kanye West, Eminem, ScHoolboy Q and more — posted a series of clips on Instagram on Monday (November 20) previewing a couple of remixes of 3 Stacks’ ambient flute music
The first video hears him injecting some heavy funk-infused percussion and André 3000 ad-libs into the opening song, “I Swear, I Really Wanted to Make a ‘Rap’ Album But This Is Literally the Way the Wind Blew Me This Time.”
The second contains a snippet of his remix to “The Slang Word P(*)ssy Rolls Off the Tongue with Far Better Ease Than the Proper Word Vagina. Do You Agree?” featuring boom bap drums and a funky bassline, which later veers into trap terrain.
After catching wind of Dem Jointz’s remixes, Snoop Dogg hopped into the comments section and told the producer: “Send me this beat asap,” although it’s unclear which track he was referring to.
A number of other Hip Hop and R&B figures also liked what they heard, with Statik Selektah and Marsha Ambrosius both casting their vote for the second remix being the best, while Bryan-Michael Cox added: “Both go crazy.”
Anything is possible with you fam! Just wow!” DJ Pooh also wrote, while comedian Affion Crockett joked: “You fixed it‼️ [fire emojis] [crying face emoji].”
Released on November 17 with just a few days’ notice, New Blue Sun marks André 3000’s long-awaited solo album and first full-length offering since OutKast‘s Idlewild in 2016.
But instead of the lyrically-dense rap record that many fans were hoping for, it’s an entirely instrumental affair that showcases 3 Stacks’ woodwind skills.
The 87-minute album has been met with mixed reactions so far, but the praise in the Hip Hop producer community has been especially loud.
Now I’m a producer, and what i hear on this album is amazing,” Pete Rock gushed on Instagram shortly after its release. “Some of y’all ears been lost [crying face emojis]. But as a producer what I hear? Sounds INCREDIBLE!!!
“Sometimes embracing a different side of a person isn’t a bad thing. In this business when you been doing the same thing forever you can get tired of it and wanna go left, nothing wrong with that.
We had jazz musicians put albums out like this, why not except when 3 Stacks do it? I mean I hear amazing samples on this album [fire] BEATS!!!”
Questlove added in his own post: “I knew this 3000 jawn was a left turn but I didn’t know it’s the RIGHT left turn […] This 3000 record is easily gonna take up space on my playlist for the next few.
All you newbie meditators/microdosers/’time-out-for-me—before-I-hurt-someone’ people who are trying to do better — THIS is good medicine music for you […] This album will be a welcome introduction.”
Snoop Dogg, meanwhile, is working on a new album of his own for which the anticipation is high. It’s called Missionary, and marks a reunion between him and Dr. Dre, more than 30 years after they first changed the game with The Chronic and Doggystyle.
