HipHopRaisedMeTheBlog.com honors Chad Lamont Butler (December 29, 1973 – December 4, 2007), widely known by his stage name Pimp C. He was an influential American rapper and record producer, celebrated for his work with Bun B as a founding member of the renowned duo, Underground Kingz (UGK).
In early December 2007, Pimp C was staying at the Mondrian Hotel in West Hollywood, California, where he was focused on creating new music and performing with Too $hort. On the morning of December 4, he was scheduled to return home, where his wife, Chinara, was waiting with his cousin Ed at the airport to pick him up. After failing to hear from him that morning, Chinara reached out to the hotel to check on his well-being. Tragically, hotel staff found him unresponsive in his room, and he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter at the young age of 33.
The coroner’s report later indicated that his death was accidental, attributed to the effects of heavy usage of “purple drank,” a mixture of codeine and promethazine, exacerbated by his pre-existing condition of sleep apnea. Pimp C often mentioned purple drank in his music, a common theme among many Southern rappers. However, his mother, Mama Wes, has expressed her belief that her son was murdered, alleging that he was poisoned, and it was reported that she commissioned a private autopsy. The identity of the “questionable character” who was last seen with him remains undisclosed.
At HipHopRaisedMeTheBlog.com, we celebrate the knowledge, culture, and lifestyle that hip-hop embodies. We pay tribute to Pimp C’s immense contributions to the genre and remember him as a Hip Hop Angel whose legacy continues to inspire and uplift.
This is Hip Hop Raised Me The Blog, where we celebrate 51 years of the youngest genre of music—hip-hop!
