Big Sean recently had the opportunity to witness a significant chapter of his family’s history come to life on the big screen, and he took a moment to thank Tyler Perry for this heartfelt experience.
On December 3, the Detroit rapper attended the premiere of “The Six Triple Eight,” a Netflix film directed and written by Perry that holds personal significance for Sean. The movie chronicles the true story of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, an all-Black, all-female unit that served during World War II. Sean’s grandmother, Mildred Virginia Dupee Leonard, was a member of this battalion, and in a touching tribute, he carried her photograph with him on the red carpet. Leonard passed away in 2014.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Sean spoke fondly of his grandmother’s legacy and her role in this remarkable unit.
Following the premiere, Sean took to Instagram to share some snapshots from the event and extend his gratitude to Tyler Perry for bringing this inspiring story to the screen. He also recognized two prominent stars of the film, Kerry Washington, who portrays the battalion’s commanding officer Charity Adams, and Oprah Winfrey, who plays the role of iconic activist Mary McLeod Bethune.
“I am eternally grateful to @tylerperry for sharing the amazing story of the World War II battalion my Grandma was a part of, along with so many strong Black women from the 6888!” he expressed.
Sean continued, “It was a privilege for our family to honor her. My entire family deeply admires Tyler Perry, Kerry Washington, and Oprah (she watched Oprah’s show every day). Seeing her name alongside so many powerful women is nothing short of a miracle and an honor.”
He expressed excitement about sharing this legacy with his son in the future, saying, “I can’t wait to show my son what his great-grandmother was a part of when he’s older.”
“The Six Triple Eight” is currently showing in select theaters and will be available on Netflix starting December 20.
In addition to honoring his grandmother, Big Sean has been navigating public speculation regarding his relationship with long-term girlfriend Jhené Aiko. Recently, he was asked by TMZ whether he felt any pressure to marry Aiko, especially after she was spotted wearing a ring.
His response was straightforward: “No, I didn’t.” He added, “I don’t think too much about it. Life is short, so you’ve got to do what feels right for you.”
When asked if Aiko was “the one,” he affirmed, “Of course.”
