Wildfires raging across Los Angeles have led to significant disruptions in Hollywood, forcing major film and television productions to halt operations amid a declared state of emergency in California. The fires, which erupted on January 7, have spread through several neighborhoods, causing safety concerns and impacting the city’s entertainment industry.
In response to the escalating situation, the Los Angeles County Fire Department has requested a suspension of filming in vulnerable areas as crews work diligently to contain the flames, particularly in the Palisades, Eaton Canyon, and Hurst Ranch regions. FilmLA, the organization responsible for managing filming permits, announced an immediate suspension of approvals in areas including Altadena, La Crescenta, La Cañada Flintridge, and parts of unincorporated Pasadena.
High-profile productions have not been spared from the chaos. Disney has suspended filming for its long-running medical drama Grey’s Anatomy and the second season of Doctor Odyssey. Similarly, Jimmy Kimmel Live has temporarily ceased production amid the turmoil. NBCUniversal has also halted work on several comedies, including Hacks, Loot, Ted, Suits: L.A., and Happy’s Place, although some movie projects continue as scheduled.
CBS has completely paused filming on shows such as After Midnight, Poppa’s House, The Neighborhood, and various iterations of the NCIS franchise. Amazon’s post-apocalyptic drama Fallout has also faced setbacks, with filming for its second season in the Santa Clarita area derailed due to the wildfires.
California Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency, unlocking resources to combat the ongoing infernos. Fire crews are actively stationed at hotspots around the city, utilizing aerial tankers and ground teams to battle the flames, which are intensified by dry winds and harsh conditions.
While no injuries have been reported on set, the wildfires serve as a stark reminder of California’s vulnerability to natural disasters, with experts linking the increasing frequency and intensity of such events to climate change.
