In a startling revelation, thirty probation officers in California have been charged for permitting and even promoting brutal “gladiator fights” involving at least 143 young inmates at the Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall. This shocking behavior came to light following an investigation triggered by a disturbing video showing officers standing idly by as a group of teens savagely assaulted a 17-year-old inmate, resulting in serious injuries including a broken nose and head trauma.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta condemned the footage, highlighting the appalling conduct of the officers, who appeared to treat the violent encounters as entertainment. He stated, “The officers look more like referees or audience members at a prize fight, not adults charged with the care and supervision of young people.”
The investigation revealed that at least 69 similar “gladiator fights” occurred between July and December 2023, with one officer, Taneha Brooks, reportedly timing the fights while another, Shawn Smyles, was seen shaking hands with an attacker. All officers involved face serious charges, including child endangerment, abuse, conspiracy, and battery, with the first 22 arraigned in Los Angeles Superior Court.
In light of these charges, the officers have been placed on leave without pay while the Los Angeles County Probation Department conducts an internal investigation. The department emphasized its commitment to accountability, stating, “We have zero tolerance for misconduct of any peace officers, especially those dealing with young people in our system.”
The Los Padrinos facility, which has been criticized for ongoing violence and safety violations, was ordered to shut down last year, yet efforts to close the center have faced resistance. As public outrage grows over the treatment of vulnerable youth, Attorney General Bonta’s remarks serve as a stern warning to those who abuse their power: “The California Department of Justice is watching, and we will hold you accountable.”
