Lauryn Hill and Stevie Wonder Honor Roberta Flack with Surprise Duet at Memorial Service

In a heartfelt tribute to the legendary Roberta Flack, Lauryn Hill and Stevie Wonder delivered a surprise performance at her memorial service held on March 10 at Harlem’s Abyssinian Baptist Church. Hill, who gained acclaim for her rendition of Flack’s “Killing Me Softly With His Song” as part of the Fugees, was visibly emotional as she addressed the audience, expressing her admiration for Flack’s impact on music and culture.

During the ceremony, Hill performed Flack’s classic “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” followed by a collaborative rendition of “Killing Me Softly” alongside Wyclef Jean and Stevie Wonder, who contributed on harmonica. Wonder also took the stage solo, performing “If It’s Magic” and “I Can See The Sun,” while sharing poignant reflections about Flack. He remarked on the beauty of her spirit, emphasizing that true vision comes from the heart rather than the eyes.

The memorial service was attended by notable figures, including civil rights leader Al Sharpton and actress Phylicia Rashad, with video messages from Alicia Keys, Clive Davis, and Dionne Warwick. Former Vice President Kamala Harris also provided a statement that was read aloud, acknowledging Flack’s groundbreaking influence and the lasting legacy she has created as both an artist and an activist.

Lauryn Hill previously paid tribute to Flack following her passing at the age of 88 last month. Hill recalled how Whitney Houston once praised Flack’s remarkable voice, which had a profound impact on her own musical journey. She highlighted Flack’s artistry, noting the sophistication of her songs, and expressed gratitude for the way Flack’s version of “Killing Me Softly” propelled her and the Fugees into mainstream recognition.

As fans and fellow artists continue to celebrate Roberta Flack’s legacy, the emotional tributes from Hill and Wonder serve as a reminder of the profound influence she had on generations of musicians and listeners alike.
