In an exciting announcement that has hip-hop fans buzzing, De La Soul is reuniting with legendary producer Prince Paul for a new album. Group member Maseo expressed the collective sentiment, stating, “We are working with Prince Paul again. It feels right.” This collaboration marks a return to their roots, as Prince Paul produced De La Soul’s seminal first three albums.
While it’s still unclear if this new project will be part of their long-awaited third volume in the Art Official Intelligence series or a separate venture, the anticipation is palpable. Earlier this year, De La Soul hinted at digging into their archives to release a rare EP from the mid-1990s, featuring a collaboration with A Tribe Called Quest.
On January 10, the group announced plans to officially release “Clear Lake Audiotorium,” a four-track EP initially distributed in 1994 as a promotional item for select DJs. This project has since gained mythical status among collectors and includes tracks from the iconic “Buhloone Mindstate” era, featuring guest appearances from A Tribe Called Quest and other legendary artists.
The original pressing of “Clear Lake Audiotorium” was limited to just 500 copies, making it a coveted item for fans. Now, the EP is available on streaming services and in both digital and physical formats, further solidifying De La Soul’s legacy.
After years of struggles with sample clearance issues and a legal battle with their former label, Tommy Boy Records, the trio’s classic albums finally hit streaming platforms in 2023. This long-overdue release came just after the passing of founding member David “Trugoy the Dove” Jolicoeur, making the moment bittersweet for fans and the remaining members alike.
As De La Soul prepares to embark on this new chapter with Prince Paul, hip-hop enthusiasts eagerly await the magic that this reunion will bring. Stay tuned for more updates as this legendary group continues to make waves in the music scene!
