Elliott Wilson recently voiced his opinion on the trend of musicians dropping albums while serving prison sentences, particularly focusing on Tory Lanez’s latest release, “Peterson.” In an episode of “The Bigger Picture,” Wilson expressed his reservations, arguing that the main objective of being in jail should be reflection and rehabilitation.
He conveyed that individuals in prison should distance themselves from the public eye and concentrate on their personal growth. According to Wilson, serving time is an opportunity to step back from societal pressures and confront one’s issues. He believes that continuing to engage with fans and the music industry during incarceration detracts from the seriousness of the situation. “I want you to just serve your time,” he remarked, implying that involvement in current cultural trends should not be part of an inmate’s journey.
Tory Lanez, currently serving a ten-year sentence for the 2020 shooting of Megan Thee Stallion, has referred to “Peterson” as the first-ever “in-real-time prison album.” He claims the album was crafted during his time behind bars and aims to maintain his distinct sound while conveying the deep emotions and challenges he faces in prison. Lanez believes that this project will resonate with listeners as it captures his experiences and sentiments during his incarceration.
Released on March 7, “Peterson” marks Lanez’s first project since “Sorry 4 What” in 2022. His ambition to create a professionally produced album while imprisoned has ignited discussions about the ethics of such releases and the importance of rehabilitation within the justice system.
