Trinidadian Authorities Launch Investigation into Vybz Kartel’s $950,000 Payment

HipHopRaisedMeTheBlog.com reports that Trinidadian authorities have initiated a probe regarding the substantial payment made to Jamaican dancehall icon Vybz Kartel, amounting to US$950,000. This investigation follows the announcement that Kartel was to perform as the main act at the One Caribbean Music Festival held on May 31 at the Queen’s Park Savannah.

Acting Commissioner of Police Junior Benjamin confirmed the investigation, stating that the Financial Investigations Branch (FIB) is examining the source, method, and timing of the payment to Kartel. Although no formal complaint has been filed, the police are acting on their own accord to ensure that the transaction adheres to legal and regulatory standards.

The Trinidad Guardian reported that senior officers indicated the investigation will focus on whether the payment was conducted in compliance with foreign exchange controls and financial transparency regulations. The inquiry could take up to 30 days, with the possibility of a further 30-day extension.

Finance Minister Davendranath Tancoo expressed his intrigue regarding the large sum of foreign exchange that reportedly changed hands for the festival. Initially, Kartel was slated to receive a total of US$1.35 million for his performance, which was set to feature other international artists such as Sizzla Kalonji and Rvssian, along with local talents Lady Lava and Ravi B.

However, Vybz Kartel ultimately pulled out of the concert, citing the promoter’s failure to fulfill contractual obligations as the reason for his absence. This development has heightened the scrutiny surrounding the financial dealings associated with the festival and has raised questions about the overall integrity of the event’s organization.

As the investigation unfolds, HipHopRaisedMeTheBlog.com will keep you updated on any new developments regarding Vybz Kartel and the implications of this significant payment. The outcome of this inquiry may have far-reaching effects not only for the artists involved but also for the broader landscape of the Caribbean music industry.
