Beloved Brooklyn Hangout Spot Closes After 12 Years

Brooklyn residents are mourning the loss of another cherished community gathering place as Bed-Vyne Brew, affectionately known as The Brew, closed its doors for good on Sunday after a remarkable 12-year run. Since its opening in 2013, The Brew has been more than just a bar; it has served as a vibrant hub where locals could unwind with drinks, enjoy live music, and connect with friends. With its inviting outdoor patio situated at the corner of Tompkins Ave and Putnam Ave, it quickly became a beloved destination for many in the neighborhood.

The Brew attracted residents from all corners of Brooklyn, becoming a melting pot of cultures and experiences. “I actually had things to do today, and I canceled my plans. We are paying our respects,” said Marc Jean from Flatbush in an interview with the BK Reader. He poignantly expressed the community’s concern, stating, “Where do we go as Black people? We all come from every borough, every neighborhood in Brooklyn. With a lot of these places closing, where do we go now?”

Earlier this year, the owners announced a temporary shutdown, citing pressure from various city agencies that they felt were targeting their establishment. Co-Owner Michael Brooks shared his frustrations, revealing that they faced multiple citations concerning noise and safety issues, which ultimately made it financially unfeasible to continue operating. “They weaponized as many agencies as they could against us,” Brooks lamented, referring to the challenges they faced following changes at the 79th Precinct in late 2023.

During their final gathering, the owners expressed heartfelt gratitude to the community for their unwavering support over the years. Rotimi Akinnyoye, another co-owner, addressed the attendees, stating, “We wanted to thank everybody for twelve years of Bed-Vyne Brew. I know that people are sad, but this is not an occasion to be sad. This is community.” He emphasized the importance of ownership, reassuring patrons that even though they were shutting down, they owned the building and were determined to remain a part of the community. “We’re not going anywhere!”

The closure of Bed-Vyne Brew marks a significant loss for the Brooklyn community, highlighting the challenges faced by local businesses in a changing urban landscape. As residents reflect on the memories created within its walls, the spirit of The Brew will undoubtedly live on in the hearts of those who cherished it.
