Fatman Scoop, the iconic figure in hip-hop and the entertainment industry, will be honored with a street co-naming ceremony in his hometown of Harlem, New York City. This initiative, led by the Freeman Family in collaboration with NYC Council Member Dr. Yusef Salaam and the Forever Fatman Scoop Foundation, aims to celebrate the profound impact he made on the community and the music scene.
The ceremony is scheduled for August 9, 2025, at 2:00 PM, at the intersection of 109th Street and 5th Avenue, where the street will be officially co-named “Isaac ‘Fatman Scoop’ Freeman III Place.” Friends, family, local leaders, community members, and fans are expected to gather to pay tribute to the late artist.
Fatman Scoop, born Isaac Freeman III on August 6, 1968, passed away on August 31, 2025, due to complications from hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. He tragically collapsed on stage while performing at the Hamden Town Center Park. Scoop was renowned for his powerful voice and high-energy performances, with hits like “Be Faithful” featuring the Crooklyn Clan solidifying his place in music history as one of the greatest party anthems.
His brother, Kendell “Sav” Freeman, expressed in a press release, “Scoop has always represented Harlem with pride. This co-naming is a tribute not just to his artistry, but to his ongoing commitment to uplifting the community that raised him.” The street naming ceremony will serve as a lasting reminder of his legacy and the joy he brought to countless fans.
In September 2024, a celebration of Fatman Scoop’s life took place at the legendary Apollo Theater, further cementing his status as a beloved figure in the music community. His influence extended beyond his hits, as he collaborated with numerous artists, including Timbaland, Missy Elliott, and Ciara, leaving an indelible mark on the hip-hop genre.
As the community prepares to honor Fatman Scoop, his contributions to music and culture will be remembered, ensuring that his legacy continues to inspire future generations.
