Ecuador’s Notorious Drug Kingpin “Fito” Extradited to the US Following Violent Escape

On July 20, 2025, Ecuador’s most notorious drug kingpin, Jose Adolfo Macias, widely known as “Fito,” was extradited to the United States after being recaptured a month earlier following a dramatic prison escape that triggered a surge of violence throughout the country. This significant development in the fight against organized crime highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Ecuadorian authorities in combating drug trafficking and gang violence.

Fito was transferred on Sunday from a maximum-security prison in Guayaquil to the local airport, where he was handed over to U.S. officials who had arrived specifically for the extradition process. According to Ecuadorian prison authorities, a U.S. Department of Justice plane landed in Guayaquil at approximately 12:45 p.m. local time and departed shortly after, around 2 p.m. The transfer was closely monitored, with Fito seen wearing shorts, a t-shirt, a helmet, and a bulletproof vest, escorted by heavily armed National Police agents.

As the leader of the powerful Los Choneros criminal organization, Fito has been implicated in the shipping and distribution of multiple tons of cocaine from Ecuador to various destinations. The U.S. government has been actively pursuing Fito, leading to his indictment in a Brooklyn federal court in April on seven counts of drug trafficking and gun smuggling.

Fito’s criminal activities escalated after his escape from prison in January 2024, where he was serving a 34-year sentence for homicide and narcotics trafficking. His escape incited a wave of violence in Ecuador, culminating in a dramatic incident where armed gangs stormed a popular television station, taking the crew hostage while broadcasting live. In response to the escalating violence, Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa declared an internal armed conflict, classifying Los Choneros and 21 other criminal groups as terror organizations.

After more than a year on the run, Fito was apprehended last month by Ecuadorian authorities in an underground bunker adjacent to a lavish mansion in Manabí province. The bunker was reportedly equipped with a home gym, marble walls, and a game room, showcasing the extravagant lifestyle Fito led while evading capture.

As part of the extradition process, U.S. prosecutors have filed a motion in the Eastern District of New York to detain Fito pending trial, citing the potential threat he poses to the public and the likelihood of him fleeing. The filing emphasized that he was extradited solely for prosecution. His lawyer in the U.S., Alexei Schacht, confirmed that Fito is scheduled to appear in Brooklyn Federal Court on Monday, although the specific time of the hearing has not been disclosed.

If convicted on the charges brought against him, Fito faces a minimum sentence of 10 years in prison, with the possibility of life imprisonment. This case underscores the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in the region and the complexities involved in addressing organized crime.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the extradition of Fito marks a significant moment in the efforts to combat drug-related violence and crime in both Ecuador and the United States.
