Sha’Carri Richardson Arrested on Domestic Violence Assault Charge Days Before Championships

Olympic sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson was arrested on July 27, 2025, following an alleged domestic violence incident involving her boyfriend, fellow runner Christian Coleman. The incident occurred at the Seattle–Tacoma International Airport, just days before she was set to compete in the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships.

According to reports, the couple got into a verbal altercation at the airport, which escalated when Richardson allegedly pushed Coleman multiple times. Eyewitnesses, including the arresting officer, claimed to have seen the 25-year-old athlete physically confront Coleman, resulting in him falling against a nearby column. Surveillance footage reportedly captured Coleman trying to walk away while Richardson continued to bump into him and even threw a pair of headphones at him.

Despite the physical confrontation, Coleman declined to press charges and stated he “did not want to be a victim,” according to the New York Times. Following her arrest, Richardson was booked at the South Correctional Entity in Des Moines, Washington, but was released the next day.

In the wake of this incident, USA Track and Field (USATF) issued a statement acknowledging awareness of the reports but refrained from commenting further on the matter. Richardson participated in the USATF Outdoor Championships preliminary rounds on July 31, where both she and Coleman advanced to the finals. Richardson finished second in her heat for the 100 meters but later withdrew from the semifinal and announced she would not compete in the 200-meter race.

Despite the turmoil, Richardson holds an automatic bid for the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, as she is the reigning World Champion in the 100-meter event. Before these recent events, she had already established herself as a formidable athlete, securing a silver medal in the 100 meters at the 2024 Paris Olympics and a gold medal in the women’s 4×100-meter relay.

As the situation develops, both fans and fellow competitors will be watching closely to see how Richardson navigates this personal challenge while maintaining her athletic career.
