Rapper A$AP Rocky is making waves with his dual role in Spike Lee’s upcoming film, Highest 2 Lowest, where he not only stars but also contributes two tracks to the film’s soundtrack. The eagerly awaited soundtrack, featuring the songs “Trunks” and “Both Eyes Closed,” is set for release on August 15, coinciding with the movie’s theatrical debut.
In Highest 2 Lowest, A$AP Rocky portrays an aspiring rapper who becomes embroiled in a kidnapping plot, a modern twist on Akira Kurosawa’s classic 1963 film High and Low. The film also stars Denzel Washington, who plays a legendary record label executive. Spike Lee recently praised A$AP’s performance on The Tonight Show, noting that the rapper held his own against Washington, a veteran actor known for his commanding presence. “In this film, Denzel and A$AP go toe-to-toe… A$AP wasn’t having that,” Lee stated.
This film marks the fifth collaboration between Lee and Washington, with Lee hinting that this might be their last joint project. The director expressed gratitude for their successful partnership, stating, “It’s been a blessing to have this body of work that the people love.”
In addition to A$AP Rocky’s contributions, the soundtrack will feature music from Aiyana-Lee, who makes her acting debut in the film, along with songs from artist Jensen McRae and the Fergus McCreadle Trio, a jazz band discovered by Lee on social media.
A$AP Rocky is also set to continue his acting journey with another film titled If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, scheduled for release in October. This upcoming project features a star-studded cast, including Conan O’Brien and Rose Byrne, and promises to showcase A$AP’s versatility as both a musician and an actor.
As anticipation builds for both the film and its accompanying soundtrack, A$AP Rocky’s return to music is highly anticipated by fans, further solidifying his place in both the music and film industries.
