In a bizarre series of events reminiscent of a real-life “Catch Me If You Can” scenario, Justine Randall, an 18-year-old woman from New York City, is on the run after allegedly hijacking multiple subway trains. Authorities are now searching for her following a bench warrant issued by a Brooklyn judge after she failed to appear for her arraignment.
Randall is facing serious charges, including stealing keys to the MTA (Metropolitan Transportation Authority), commandeering out-of-service trains in Brooklyn and Queens, and assaulting a 54-year-old transit worker during one of her escapades. According to Tramell Thompson, vice president of transit operations for the Transport Workers Union Local 100, Randall appears to show a blatant disregard for the justice system.
The troubling incidents reportedly began in March and continued as recently as last month. Witnesses have recounted Randall’s reckless behavior, including a moment when a teen advised her about the dangers of her actions. According to court documents, she dismissively responded, “Oh well.”
One veteran transit worker attempted to intervene during one of Randall’s joyrides but was met with violence; he was assaulted and pepper-sprayed while on a Brooklyn train. “They had sprayed me and assaulted me — punching me, choking me, etc.,” he recounted, choosing to remain anonymous due to safety concerns.
Thompson has expressed concern over the persistent issue of train thefts, noting that incidents like this occur almost weekly. He emphasized the lack of effective deterrents to prevent such actions, stating, “I don’t think there’s any type of deterrence.”
The situation has raised alarms among transit workers, with one stating that the ongoing criminal behavior could escalate further, warning, “This is gonna continue to escalate to something worse because this person doesn’t have any regard for life or humanity.”
As police continue their search for Randall, the MTA has not yet commented on the situation, leaving many to wonder what measures will be taken to ensure the safety of workers and commuters alike.
