In a shocking incident that has left the community reeling, an 18-year-old masked teenager, Brandon Balfour, has been arrested for the attempted murder of a 29-year-old woman aboard a train in Lower Manhattan. The violent attack occurred last week when Balfour allegedly slashed the victim multiple times with a large kitchen knife after she refused to surrender her bag.
The incident took place around 11:10 p.m. on a northbound No. 3 train. According to prosecutors, the victim, who is nonverbal and can only communicate through writing, described feeling uneasy as Balfour looked at her in a “strange” manner while they were alone in the train car. When she attempted to exit the train, Balfour reportedly followed her and threatened to stab her if she did not hand over her belongings.
When the woman refused and sought help, Balfour brandished a 14- to 16-inch kitchen knife and attacked her, inflicting severe injuries to her left arm, hands, elbow, and back. Surveillance footage captured the brutal assault, which left the victim bleeding profusely on the train floor.
After the attack, Balfour allegedly stole the woman’s cellphone and discarded the knife as he fled the scene. The victim was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where she underwent “significant and extensive surgery” due to stab wounds that pierced her diaphragm, causing internal injuries.
Balfour was arrested on Friday after being located at a shelter in Jamaica, Queens. Authorities reported that he was found with the yellow mask he wore during the assault and a bloodied cellphone. At his arraignment on Sunday, he faced charges of attempted murder in the second degree, assault, and robbery. Prosecutors requested that he be held without bail, and the court complied, scheduling his next appearance for Thursday.
