As NBA YoungBoy prepares to kick off his highly anticipated first-ever headlining tour in support of his new album, MASA, he is facing a significant legal challenge from his retail partner, Westside Merchandising. The lawsuit comes just as the rapper is gearing up for a 27-city trek, which will include major stops in Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Chicago, Detroit, Miami, and Atlanta.
According to reports from Billboard, Westside Merchandising claims they paid YoungBoy a $1 million advance in 2023 as part of a licensing deal that granted them exclusive rights to sell his merchandise online and at live events. The company alleges that part of their agreement required YoungBoy to actively promote the merchandise, a stipulation they claim he has failed to fulfill, even following his release from prison after receiving a presidential pardon.
Complicating matters, NBA YoungBoy reportedly sent Westside a letter prior to announcing his tour, stating that he was terminating their contract due to “poor performance.” The lawsuit contends, “The purpose behind defendants’ purported termination is clear: YoungBoy has embarked on a nationwide 32-date lucrative tour, and defendants have obviously obtained a new advance from another company to handle the touring merchandise even though defendants are contractually obligated to use Westside.”
Westside Merch is asking the court for an order that would reaffirm their rights to handle the merchandise during NBA YoungBoy’s upcoming tour. They are also seeking financial damages, arguing that YoungBoy’s actions could infringe upon their exclusive license to sell Never Broke Again merchandise.
As of now, NBA YoungBoy has not publicly addressed the lawsuit, and the outcome remains uncertain as the tour approaches. The legal dispute adds an unexpected layer to what should be a celebratory moment for the rapper, marking a new chapter in his career.
This situation underscores the complexities that can arise in the music industry, particularly regarding contractual obligations and partnerships. As NBA YoungBoy navigates these legal challenges, fans will be keenly watching how this impacts his tour and overall brand.
