In a tragic turn of events, Maurice Pierce, 25, of Piscataway, has been sentenced to 25 years in state prison for the 2023 shooting death of Jameer Outsey, a star football player from Somerset County. The sentencing took place on August 25, 2025, as confirmed by the Union County Prosecutor’s Office.
Pierce was convicted of first-degree aggravated manslaughter and second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, following a shooting incident that occurred on August 12, 2023. Police responded to reports of gunfire at the intersection of North Broad Street and Magnolia Avenue in Elizabeth, where they found Outsey, 27, critically injured. Despite being rushed to a local hospital, Outsey was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
A graduate of Franklin High School in 2014, Outsey was known for his exceptional talent on the football field. He continued his athletic career at the University of Iowa and later at a community college in Arizona, before transferring to the University of Nevada Las Vegas.
Pierce was arrested approximately a month after the incident and was indicted by a grand jury on multiple charges, including first-degree murder. However, details surrounding his conviction for a lesser charge have not been disclosed by prosecutors.
Under the No Early Release Act, Pierce is required to serve 85% of his sentence, which amounts to 21 years and three months, before he becomes eligible for parole.
