In a significant drug bust, Australian authorities have charged three dockworkers following the discovery of approximately 1,116 pounds of cocaine concealed behind a false wall in a shipping container at the Sydney waterfront. The Australian Federal Police announced this development, revealing that the cocaine has a staggering street value of over $107 million.
The dockworkers, aged 25, 38, and 42, appeared in a Sydney court on Monday. The younger suspects face charges of importing a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug and attempting to possess a commercial quantity of cocaine. The older suspect has been charged with dealing with money believed to be proceeds from general crime.
Law enforcement reported that the 25-year-old was arrested as he exited the shipping container, equipped with a crowbar, an angle grinder, and other tools allegedly used to cut into the false wall. The 38-year-old was apprehended shortly after returning to the container, while the 42-year-old was arrested during the execution of a search warrant at the home of the younger suspect.
Police released multiple images from the operation, which highlighted the scale of the drug bust. Notably, both of the older suspects were employed as forklift drivers by a global shipping and logistics company, whose name has not been disclosed.
Additionally, authorities confiscated $216,240 in cash, believed to be proceeds of crime. If convicted, all three men could face potential life sentences. The 42-year-old has been released on bail, while the younger suspects remain in custody, with their next court appearance scheduled for October 29.
The shipping container reportedly originated from Europe, and investigations into the source of the cocaine are ongoing. The arrests were made by the Multi Agency Strike Team, which consists of state and federal agencies targeting “trusted insiders” within supply chains that enable organized crime groups to smuggle illicit drugs into Australia.
Detective Superintendent Peter Fogarty warned, “To anyone lured in by the false promise of riches from drug importations – these offenses carry the potential of life in jail.” This bust follows a record seizure last December, where Australian police confiscated 2.3 tons of cocaine and arrested 13 individuals in related raids after a fishing boat malfunctioned off the coast of Queensland.
