In a prestigious recognition of its contributions to the music industry, Sony Music Publishing (SMP) has been awarded the title of 2025 Publisher of the Year at the BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards. The announcement was made during a ceremony held in Los Angeles on August 28, where SMP songwriters were celebrated for their impressive representation across 23 of the year’s top-performing songs.
Upon accepting the award, Katie Welle, President and Head of US A&R at Sony Music Publishing, expressed her gratitude, stating, “Congratulations to all of Sony Music Publishing’s incredibly talented songwriters – we are so inspired by your artistry and impact each day. Thank you to the entire SMP team for your dedication and passion, and thank you to everyone at BMI for recognizing our songwriters and team.”
The event also highlighted standout achievements by SMP songwriters, with Sounwave receiving the R&B/Hip-Hop Song of the Year award for his work on Kendrick Lamar’s track Not Like Us. Sounwave was also honored as BMI’s R&B/Hip-Hop Producer of the Year for his contributions to Lamar’s acclaimed Euphoria, 6:16 in LA, and the 2025 GNX album.
In addition, Mike Dean, another SMP signer, was recognized as Songwriter of the Year, sharing the honor with Tay Keith and GloRilla. Dean’s accolades include work on major hits such as Popular by The Weeknd and Playboi Carti, as well as Type St by Future, Metro Boomin, and Travis Scott.
The ceremony also celebrated GloRilla with the BMI Impact Award and T-Pain with the BMI President’s Award, marking a night of recognition for influential figures in the R&B and hip-hop genres.
