Alena Analeigh McQuarter is making headlines as a groundbreaking figure in science and medicine, having made history at just 13 years old as the youngest Black person ever accepted into medical school in the United States. Now, at the age of 16, she has further solidified her legacy by becoming a Spring 2025 initiate of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. through the Lambda Nu Sigma Alumnae Chapter in Toronto, Canada.
Born in 2008 in Fontana, California, and raised near Fort Worth, Texas, Alena has consistently defied expectations. She graduated high school at the remarkable age of 12 and subsequently enrolled at Arizona State University, initially pursuing a dual major in astronomical and planetary science and chemistry. Her aspiration was to become a NASA engineer, a goal she actively pursued by interning at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, making her the youngest person to secure an internship there.
However, a transformative trip to Jordan with her nonprofit, Brown STEM Girl, shifted her focus toward medicine. Witnessing global health disparities inspired her to pivot toward pre-medical studies, specifically in viral immunology. In 2022, Alena was granted early acceptance to the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Heersink School of Medicine through the prestigious Burroughs Wellcome Scholars Early Assurance Program.
Beyond her academic accomplishments, Alena is making waves as the founder of Brown STEM Girl, a platform dedicated to empowering girls of color in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Her organization offers scholarships, mentorships, and international study opportunities, aiming to equip the next generation of female scientists and leaders.
