In a significant law enforcement operation, nineteen individuals associated with the Bergen-Lafayette gang in Jersey City have been charged in connection with a sprawling drug trafficking conspiracy. Acting U.S. Attorney and Special Attorney Alina Habba announced the charges today, highlighting the gang’s operations out of the Salem Lafayette Housing Complex.
According to prosecutors, the defendants were involved in distributing large quantities of fentanyl, cocaine base, PCP, and various prescription pills. The investigation, which lasted several months, utilized wiretaps, confidential informant purchases, telephone records, and both physical and fixed surveillance to document hundreds of narcotics transactions.
The following individuals were charged in the case: Isaiah West (22), Jamantay Gaines (28), Curtis Felder (26), Dorian Garrett (21), William Washington (23), Aamir Thomas (23), Nareef Frimpong (24), Reakwon Harvey (28), Pedro Torres (21), Najon Pettiford (23), Desmar Rivers (26), Stephon Turner (26), Tyler Thornton (30), Christopher Maldonado (18), Keiyan Golden (48), Cornell Bell (49), Serge Rodriguez (29), Gerard Crawford (51), and Alfred Reaves (56).
The charges include conspiracy to distribute 40 grams or more of fentanyl, 28 grams or more of cocaine base, and other narcotics, including heroin and prescription pills. Sixteen of the defendants were arrested today and are scheduled for initial court appearances before U.S. Magistrate Judge José R. Almonte in Newark federal court. One defendant was already in custody on state charges, while two remain at large.
In a statement, Alina Habba emphasized the detrimental impact of the gang’s operations on the community, stating, “These defendants are charged with operating a drug trafficking organization that poisoned the community of Jersey City.” She commended the collaborative effort of law enforcement in combatting drug-related crime.
Jersey City Public Safety Director James Shea echoed this sentiment, affirming that the arrests contribute to the ongoing efforts to enhance community safety and the removal of illegal drugs and firearms from the streets. This investigation was part of the Jersey City Violent Crime Initiative (VCI), established in 2018 to address violent crime in the area.
