Politics: Chelsea Clinton Rules Out Congressional Run as JFK’s Grandson Considers Bid

Chelsea Clinton has officially stated that she will not pursue a congressional seat to replace retiring New York Rep. Jerry Nadler, as speculation grows around Jack Schlossberg, the grandson of former President John F. Kennedy, considering a run for the same position. A spokesperson for Clinton confirmed on September 3 that she is “not considering a run,” following Nadler’s announcement that he would vacate his seat after 32 years in Congress.

This decision is not unprecedented for Clinton, who previously declined to enter politics during an October 2019 appearance on The View, where she indicated she was not looking to replace former Rep. Nita Lowey in a different New York district. Instead, Clinton has focused on global health advocacy and writing, both independently and in collaboration with her mother, Hillary Clinton.

In contrast, Schlossberg, a 32-year-old social media influencer and son of Caroline Kennedy, is contemplating a candidacy for New York’s 12th congressional district, which encompasses parts of New York City. He expressed to The New York Times that running for office is “certainly a possibility.” If he decides to move forward, he would be the first member of the Kennedy family to seek a congressional seat since Joe Kennedy III left his position in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2020.

Longtime Rep. Jerry Nadler, who has been a significant figure in Congress, particularly known for his role in the impeachment proceedings against former President Donald Trump, emphasized the need for “generational change” in his statement about stepping down. He praised his former aide, Micah Lasher, but refrained from endorsing any specific successor at this time.

As the political landscape shifts with Nadler’s retirement and potential new candidates emerging, the upcoming election for New York’s 12th congressional district promises to be closely watched.
