In a significant drug bust, authorities have confiscated more than 750 pounds of suspected cocaine at the Blue Water Bridge, a major border crossing between the United States and Canada. The seizures occurred during two separate inspections last month, highlighting ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking across the border.
According to the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), the first seizure took place on August 13, when a commercial truck arriving from the U.S. was referred for a secondary examination. During this thorough inspection, border officers discovered approximately 150 kilograms (or 330 pounds) of suspected cocaine concealed within six boxes. The estimated street value of this seizure is a staggering $18.8 million. Gurjeet Singh, a 28-year-old resident of Brampton, Ontario, was arrested in connection with this incident.
The following day, on August 14, another U.S.-bound truck was also referred for secondary examination by CBSA officers. This inspection revealed an even larger cache of drugs, with 199 kilograms (approximately 438 pounds) of suspected cocaine found within the commercial load. The estimated street value of this second seizure was approximately $24.9 million. Abdikadir Egal, a 38-year-old from Etobicoke, Ontario, was arrested as part of this operation.
These recent busts add to a troubling trend of drug trafficking activity at the Blue Water Bridge. In July, authorities seized 197 kilograms of cocaine at the same location, while a previous operation in May resulted in the confiscation of more than 400 pounds of cocaine at the nearby Ambassador Bridge.
The CBSA continues to enhance its border security measures in response to the increasing frequency of drug smuggling attempts. These operations not only aim to intercept illegal substances but also to disrupt organized crime networks that rely on cross-border trafficking to distribute drugs throughout North America.
As investigations into these incidents progress, authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity at the border. The significant quantities of drugs being intercepted underscore the ongoing challenge of drug trafficking and the importance of collaborative efforts between Canadian and U.S. law enforcement agencies.
