Ice Cube recently shared insights into his role in the pandemic-era reboot of War of the Worlds, which has finally premiered after a lengthy delay. The film, directed by Rich Lee, features Ice Cube as government computer analyst Will Radford and is a modern take on H.G. Wells’ classic alien invasion novel.
In a livestream with Kai Cenat, Ice Cube recounted the unconventional circumstances under which the film was made, revealing that he shot his scenes in isolation from both the director and fellow actors. “This is a movie I did in 2020 during the pandemic, five years ago,” he explained. “We shot it in 15 days, and it was during the pandemic. So, the director wasn’t in there, and none of the actors were in there. This was the only way we could really shoot the movie.”
The unique filming method, which involved using computer screens to represent the story, was necessitated by the safety measures in place at the time. Ice Cube elaborated, “That’s why it’s only the computer screen. But really, if sh*t went down, everybody would only have their screen to look at.”
The film finally debuted on Prime Video on July 30, 2025, but Ice Cube noted that its release was delayed due to the complexities of editing and assembling footage. “Well, it was a Universal movie, and they sold it to Amazon Prime. It took a minute to finish the movie because of how it’s shot,” he said, explaining that the film utilized real surveillance footage from around the world, which required extensive work to compile.
Joining Ice Cube in the thriller are notable cast members including Eva Longoria, Clark Gregg, Andrea Savage, and Iman Benson. Despite its intriguing premise, the reboot has received a dismal 4% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which may impact its reception among audiences.
