A groundbreaking exhibition showcasing the work of jewelry designer Douriean Fletcher, titled “Douriean Fletcher: Jewelry of the Afrofuture,” is set to open at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City on October 7, 2025, and will run until March 15, 2026. This marks the first major museum exhibition dedicated to Fletcher, who gained recognition for her intricate jewelry designs featured in the acclaimed films Black Panther and Wakanda Forever.

The exhibition will highlight Fletcher’s sculptural pieces crafted from materials such as brass, gold, shells, and semi-precious stones. Her work explores themes of Black identity, spirituality, and Afrofuturism, with Fletcher stating, “My work channels Afrofuturism by honoring ancestral technologies while imagining new futures through adornment.” Each piece she creates is intended to be an energetic portal, connecting viewers to African cosmologies and encouraging personal empowerment and spiritual liberation.
Co-curated by professor and design historian Sebastian Grant and Barbara Paris Gifford, the museum’s senior curator of contemporary art, craft, and design, the exhibit will feature over 150 works divided into three thematic sections. One section will trace Fletcher’s formative years and early artistic explorations, while another will focus on her current artistic endeavors. Notable pieces include a 2013 sculptural shell cuff and a 2012 necklace made from 18-karat gold-plated brass, cowrie shells, gold-filled chain, and wire.

The third section will showcase designs created for Hollywood, including costumes from Black Panther and Coming 2 America, as well as the 2016 Roots miniseries. Highlights include the complete tribal council look worn by Ramonda (Angela Bassett) in Black Panther, complete with an ornate necklace and dress ornament, and a signature look worn by Okoye (Danai Gurira), featuring a striking necklace and armor made from gold-plated materials and Ghanaian beads.

Additionally, the exhibition will include 75 works from Fletcher’s personal collection, showcasing tools, books, and photographs that have inspired her creative journey. Visitors will also have the opportunity to participate in intimate beading workshops led by Fletcher, offering a unique chance to learn from the master herself.

“Douriean Fletcher: Jewelry of the Afrofuture” promises to be a captivating exploration of jewelry as a medium for cultural expression and empowerment. For those interested in fashion, art, and the intersection of culture, this exhibition is not to be missed.
