
In a dramatic incident that unfolded on Friday evening, a New York State Department of Corrections transport bus carrying nearly 30 inmates caught fire near Interstate 84 in Fishkill. The alarm was raised around 8 p.m. when 911 received reports of the bus engulfed in flames at the intersection of Route 9D and Dogwood Lane.
Witnesses captured the chaotic scene on cellphone video, showcasing the severity of the fire and the tumult that erupted among the inmates. Reports indicated that fights broke out between inmates and NYS Corrections Officers, adding to the urgency of the situation as emergency responders rushed to the scene.


Local police from the Town of Fishkill were the first to arrive, quickly requesting backup from various agencies including the New York State Police, Town of East Fishkill Police, Town of Poughkeepsie Police, and several others. Fire departments from Chelsea and Castle Point worked diligently to extinguish the flames, while ambulance crews from Mobile Life, Beacon Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Town of Newburgh Ambulance, and Philipstown Volunteer Ambulance Corps were on standby to assist any injured individuals.


According to police reports, two inmates were transported to local hospitals with minor injuries, although one inmate was noted to have suffered a severe head injury. Fortunately, the remaining 25 inmates were safely transferred to other buses and subsequently taken to Downstate Correctional Facility.
Initial investigations suggest that a mechanical issue may have caused the bus fire, but further inquiries are underway to confirm the exact cause of the incident.
